About the event

Before the American Revolutionary War began… there was violence, protest, and resistance right here pre-Clayton.

In August 1768, angry Johnston County residents confronted colonial judges at Johnston Courthouse—then known as Hinton’s Quarters—in a dramatic clash over taxes and British power. The confrontation became known as the Regulator Skirmish at Hinton’s Quarters, an event that unfolded years before the first shots of the Revolution. For that story and a few more about the Clayton prior to the Revolutionary War:

Join the Clayton Historical Association on Saturday, March 21 for a fascinating presentation by Todd Johnson, Director of the Johnston County Heritage Center, as he tells the full story of this little-known local event, that helped foreshadow America’s fight for independence, and more stories about "pre-Clayton."
